Sherfane Rutherford slams St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots owner
While speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing IL T20, Sherfane Rutherford spoke about the unfortunate incident and believes that a player must be treated with respect. He further claimed that the owner didn't play any cricket and thus, he won't understand the good and bad days of the sport.
"It's important that you respect the player because at the end of the day, it's my job and this is what I want to do. So I don't think I purposely want to not perform. The owner didn't play any cricket. So obviously if you never play the sport, you would not understand the top days, the good days and the bad days - they are always there in cricket," Rutherford said.
"So it's just emotions. I think he just got off of emotions. As adults, we need to control that because at the end of the day, our decision can take us farther. So I think it was him wrongdoing," he told Cricbuzz.
How did this incident happen?
Further speaking on the incident, Sherfane Rutherford elaborated on the whole incident and how it all started. After being dismissed for a duck, he got a message from the team owner who blamed him for the team's defeat.
The allrounder wasn't happy with the timings of the text and immediately conveyed his message to the owner, who is an Indian-origin businessman. The owner didn't like the way of Sherfane Rutherford's reply and thus, he was asked to leave the team.
"After a game against Barbados (which) we lost, the owner texted me about making the team lose. He said, I caused them to lose the game. I responded in a way. That is not a good time to message a player," Sherfane Rutherford revealed.
"We are professionals, we have feelings. So obviously when you're not doing well, you just want to reflect. So, when he texted me at the wrong time, I responded to him. That was where they decided for me to leave," he said.
Previous instances of team owners involving in team matters
This is not the first time that the franchise league owners have been criticized for getting involved in the team's matters. In IPL 2024, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants Sanjiv Goenka was blasted for talking in a rude way to his team's captain KL Rahul after they had lost a game to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Goenka and Rahul were seen in an animated discussion after the match in which the owner was clearly upset and let out his emotions in front of the public camera. The discussion became a hot topic of the tournament and Goenka received flak for dealing in such a way with a national cricketer.
