Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh has finally broken his silence on being scolded by the captain, Shreyas Iyer, during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad earlier this month.

Shreyas Iyer is known for his typically composed demeanor, but he shocked fans by reacting angrily to Shashank Singh after his unexpected mistake in the high-stakes match. However, Punjab Kings managed to thrash Mumbai Indians and made it to the IPL 2025 final, but lost the trophy to RCB.

Punjab Kings were chasing a big target of 204 runs. At 169/4 in the 17th over, they still had a good chance, but Shashank's careless attitude could have cost them Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians. Shashank hit a ball from Trent Boult and went for a quick single.

However, the PBKS batter seemed too relaxed while running, giving Hardik Pandya enough time to pick up the ball and hit the stumps directly. Shashank was run out at a crucial stage, leaving his team's dugout stunned. Shreyas Iyer couldn’t hide his frustration.

Cameras caught the PBKS skipper yelling and abusing Shashank, as he was upset with the latter’s casual approach during customary handshakes in Ahmedabad. Even Iyer refused to shake hands with Shashank and was heard telling him not to “show his face.”

Iyer should have slapped me: Shashank Singh

Now, Shashank admitted that he deserved to be "slapped" by Shreyas Iyer for his costly mistake in Qualifier 2. The PBKS star also revealed that even his father didn’t speak to him until the IPL 2025 final, where his team suffered a six-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Shashank Singh was quoted as saying by The Indian Express, “I deserve it; Iyer should have slapped me. My father didn’t speak to me till the finals. I was casual; I was walking on the beach, not even in the garden. It was a crucial time. Shreyas was clear that I didn’t expect this from you, but later he took me out for dinner.”

Shashank Singh hails Shreyas Iyer as the best T20 captain

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old batter praised Iyer as the best T20 captain right now. The right-handed batter said that Iyer gives players freedom, treats everyone equally, and stays open to suggestions during matches. He further noted that the Punjab Kings skipper is a rare kind of leader presently.

He signed off by saying, “Whatever I have spoken to others and seen, there is no better captain than him in current times in world cricket. He gives us freedom; he treats everyone equally. No one will say, Shreyas has an attitude. The youngsters in the dressing room find him to be a chill bandaa. Shreyas is the only captain who has told us that if anyone has any suggestion during the game, he can come and convey it to him. If he feels it’s the right advice, he will take it. It’s rare.”

Notably, Shashank had an impressive IPL 2025 season with PBKS, amassing 350 runs at an amazing average of 50.00 and a strike rate of 153.50. He slammed three half-centuries throughout the season, including a 30-ball 61* against RCB in the IPL 2025 final in Ahmedabad.
