Amidst the heavy criticism and intense debate over Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad, the former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has brought the “luck” factor into the discussion. He sympathized with both the selectors and Shreyas Iyer.
Parthiv Patel has stressed that the criticism is not a new thing in Indian cricket when a team is selected for any competition, but he strongly feels Iyer deserved a spot in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, given the way the Mumbaikar has been performing across the formats.

He also pointed out how the left-handed batters Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh made the cut, but the right-handed batter Iyer missed out, which sparked outrage among the fans.
Parthiv Patel said on his YouTube channel, “The criticism is bound to happen whenever an Indian team is selected. Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh were selected, both left-handed batters. So, the question arises, why didn't Shreyas Iyer find a place?”
However, Patel stressed that Iyer’s exclusion does not reflect his ability, and he simply needs patience and perseverance, as luck sometimes plays a key role in the selection.
Someone had to be unlucky: Parthiv Patel
The former wicketkeeper added, “But in my opinion, I feel that someone had to be unlucky. When you are playing cricket, you want the luck to favor you at times, as it makes a big difference. I feel Shreyas Iyer needs to do just one thing: he just has to wait and have some patience.”
The Indian selectors had a very tough job picking the 15 players for the 2025 Asia Cup because India has so many talented cricketers. Some players who were unlucky to miss out include Shreyas Iyer, Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Prasidh Krishna, all of whom have been in excellent form recently.

Meanwhile, Parthiv Patel also pointed out that India has so many talented players, and choosing just 15 players from such a strong pool is never easy. He noted that the players like Shreyas Iyer, Sai Sudharsan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who missed out on the selections, were just unlucky, but they are equally capable as those selected, so they just need to wait for their time.
He signed off by saying, “My sympathy is with the Indian selectors because being an Indian selector is the most difficult thing right now. India has so many talented players that whenever you sit down to select a team, you will definitely feel why a player missed out or why a player was picked.
15 players were selected, but there are equally capable players like Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan, and the Purple Cap winner Prasidh Krishna.”
