India and Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer who is currently recovering from his shoulder surgery is expected to miss the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka if reports are to be believed. It seems that he is yet to gain full fitness and has not healed completely after getting surgery on his separated shoulder.
The 26-year-old had suffered the injury during the first ODI between India and England in March which was played at the MCA Stadium in Pune. He then had to undergo surgery to treat the same on 9 April to fix the injury. It was expected that Shreyas Iyer will take 3-4 months to regain full fitness. This implies that it is highly unlikely that he’d be able to play against Sri Lanka.
Still Not Clear If Shreyas Iyer Will Recover Fully And Will Be Match-Fit In Time For The Tour Of Sri Lanka: BCCI Source
As per reports of the Hindu website, the BCCI medical staff gave an update on the condition of Shreyas Iyer to the selectors and the team management, given that he is one of the contenders to captain India on the tour of Sri Lanka for the ODI and T20I series.
It seems that Iyer is targeting the T20 World Cup later to be hosted in India, which will give him enough time to recover fully but will also help him regain match fitness.
“It’s still not clear if Shreyas will recover fully and will be match-fit in time for the tour of Sri Lanka. Normally, a surgery of this scale along with rest, extensive rehab and training to get back in shape takes around four months,” a senior BCCI source privy to player selections earlier told PTI.
With Shreyas Iyer missing the flight to Sri Lanka, the captaincy choices boil down to Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya. This is because most of the first-choice players will be in England for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand and the five-Test series against England after that.
Shikhar Dhawan has captained Delhi in domestic cricket, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in previous seasons of the IPL, and is the vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2021. Hardik Pandya has not captained any team till now but is one of the main members of the Indian leadership group.
