Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim expressed his delight with middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion in the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. Saba Karim emphasized that the team management and selectors are persistently supporting Shreyas Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer made a comeback in international cricket in the Asia Cup 2023 after a prolonged injury layoff. The right-handed batter played just two matches against Pakistan and Nepal in the continental tournament. He missed the Super Four stage and the final match due to back spasms.

They Are Persisting With Shreyas Iyer – Saba Karim

In a conversation on JioCinema’s ‘Home of the Blues,’ Saba Karim highlighted Shreyas Iyer‘s crucial role in the one-day setup, expressing happiness over selectors backing him before the World Cup.

“I am glad that they are persisting with Shreyas Iyer. It really shows that the team management and selectors trust him so much. And Shreyas played a very vital role in the one-day setup. So, I am happy to see that they are backing him right till they announce the World Cup side,” Saba Karim told Jio Cinema.

Despite injury concerns, the 28-year-old has retained his place in the squad for the ODI series against Australia. Iyer is expected to prove his match fitness during the series, with the ODI World Cup 2023 less than three weeks away.

You Need To Back Players – Saba Karim

Saba Karim believes that as long as Shreyas Iyer is fit to play, his place in the team should not be uncertain, regardless of his performance in the upcoming games. Karim emphasized the importance of backing players with a good track record.

“I don’t think there should be any issue with him being part of the side if he’s fit, even if he does not score runs in these two or three games – it does not matter,” Karim further added.

“You need to back players who have done well for you in the past and they in any case get three ODI games here plus the two practice matches. The kind of player Shreyas Iyer is – I am pretty excited for him to get back into the fold and score runs at the right time for the Indian side,” he concluded.

The Rohit Sharma-led team will host a three-match series against the Pat Cummins-led team, with the first match scheduled to be played in Mohali on September 22. The remaining two matches will be played on September 24 and 27, respectively.
