A major blow has hit the India National Cricket Team, as the ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after suffering internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury.

Shreyas Iyer gave India a big worry during the third ODI against Australia after getting hurt while taking a brilliant catch in Sydney. Fielding at backward point, the vice-captain ran back and dived full length to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling.

However, the Mumbaiker held on to the ball, but he landed awkwardly on his left side. Iyer looked in pain as he clutched his ribs, and the physio, Kamlesh Jain, quickly came onto the field to check on him. He was then taken off and sent to the hospital for precautionary scans.

Later, the BCCI issued a statement: “Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.”

Shreyas Iyer under intensive care in Sydney

Meanwhile, Shreyas has internal bleeding. As reported by PTI, Iyer is currently under close medical observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a Sydney hospital, where doctors are monitoring the Indian vice-captain’s condition round the clock.

Early medical reports confirmed signs of internal bleeding, prompting the medical team to take immediate precautionary action. Sources close to the India National Cricket Team revealed that Iyer is likely to remain hospitalized for five to seven days as he undergoes further tests and treatment.

The injury could have been fatal: Source

A source close to the development was quoted as saying by PTI, “Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop the spread of infection due to bleeding.”

He added, “The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon. Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it's difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket.”

Shreyas Iyer’s injury puts South Africa series in doubt

The 31-year-old batter is likely to stay in a Sydney hospital for about a week before doctors allow him to fly back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad that will take on the Kangaroos in the five-match T20I series opener on October 29 at the Manuka Oval Cricket Ground in Canberra.

Well, Iyer’s rib injury from the final ODI against Australia has cast serious doubt over his availability for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. The injury has left the Indian vice-captain uncertain for the crucial three-match ODI series against the Proteas side, starting on November 30.

The BCCI is yet to release an official update on Iyer’s recovery, and in case he fails to regain full fitness, Tilak Varma is likely to be drafted into the squad for the South Africa series.
