It's been a year of trophies for Shreyas Iyer, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) would have been certainly over the moon, having spent such a mouth-watering amount of money on the Indian batter at the IPL 2025 Auction.

It all started with the Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph earlier this year. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL 2024 triumph, Shreyas Iyer won the Irani Cup under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy with Mumbai.

It was Mumbai's first Iran Cup victory after 27 years. Notably, Rahane also led Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy triumph earlier this year. Now, Mumbai won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 title under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy on Sunday, December 15.

Mumbai clinched its second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title on Sunday by defeating Madhya Pradesh in the final by five wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, the Mumbai cricket team chased down a target of 175 runs with more than two overs to spare, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s quick knock of 48 runs off 35 balls and Ajinkya Rahane’s valuable 37 runs off 30 balls to win back-to-back SMAT titles after winning in 2022.

With this victory, Mumbai became the fourth team to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy twice, while Tamil Nadu leads with three SMAT titles. Baroda (2011/12, 2013/14), Gujarat (2012/13, 2014/15), and Karnataka (2018/19, 2019/20) have also won the SMAT title twice so far.

This was Mumbai's second final in the tournament, and they maintained a perfect record by winning both of their title clashes. On the other hand, Madhya Pradesh faced heartbreak, losing its second final after reaching the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final for the first time in 14 years.

Shreyas Iyer creates history with SMAT and IPL wins in 2024

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer scripted history after leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 title victory over Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru. Iyer became the first captain in history to win both the IPL and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy trophies as captain in the same year.

The Indian batter finished the tournament as the fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 345 runs in nine matches at an impressive average of 49.28, including one century, for Mumbai. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane was the leading run scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 with 469 runs in 8 innings.

Rahane was named Player of the Tournament for his incredible batting display in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25. Madhya Pradesh batter Rajat Patidar, who will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2025, finished as the second-highest run scorer in the tournament with 428 runs in 9 innings.

Iyer set to be named as PBKS captain

Last month, Shreyas became the second-most expensive player in IPL history after being snapped up by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for INR 26.75 crore in the 2025 IPL Mega Auction.

He is expected to be named Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain ahead of the next season, with the official announcement to be made soon. He reunited with Ricky Ponting at the PBKS, as the duo worked together for Delhi Capitals.
