Indian middle order batter and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer underwent surgery for his lower back issue in London, United Kingdom, on Tuesday, April 18. According to reports, Shreyas Iyer’s surgery was successful, and the batter is expected to be out of action for at least three months.
Shreyas Iyer suffered from his back issues for a long time and missed the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) and three ODI series against Australia at home. The 28-year-old was ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and is expected to miss the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final.

The Times of India report suggests that Shreyas Iyer underwent successful surgery for his back issue. The right-handed batter needs three months of rest before he can resume his training. Iyer wanted to keep him fit before the start of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played at home later this year.
“Shreyas underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday in London. In fact, he walked a bit too yesterday,” a source told as quoted by TOI.
Earlier last week, the board released an official statement about Shreyas Iyer’s surgery on their official website, announcing that he will undergo surgery next week.
“Mr Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week. He will remain under the surgeon’s care for two weeks and will return to the NCA after that for rehabilitation,” a media release from the BCCI.

Nitish Rana was named the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders as the interim captain for the IPL 2023 in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. The Kolkata-based franchise hasn’t played well in the ongoing season, having won only two games out of six matches. Iyer’s absence made the KKR batting lineup weak with a few Indian batters.
