Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings hunt down 265; full list of highest successful run chases in T20 history

The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, match no.35 between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) just got over. It was a high-scoring encounter in the game. As PBKS beat DC by 6 wickets, Punjab Kings chased down the highest total in IPL history, surpassing their previous run-chase of 262 runs.

Axar Patel won the toss and elected to bat first. It was a KL Rahul storm in the first innings that helped DC score their highest-ever total in IPL history. He smashed several records during his excellent innings of 152* runs.

KL Rahul creates history

KL Rahul became the first Indian batter to score a 150+ score. It was his fastest ever IPL century; he broke the record held by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 141 against the same opposition in the competition last year.

KL Rahul went berserk in the match as he scored his first hundred of this season of the tournament. He was excellent in the first innings, and DC scored 264/3, and the only third batter to score 150+.

Punjab Kings achieve the highest run chase

However, Shreyas Iyer-led side had other ideas, as the PBKS openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh went berserk as the two scored 120 runs in the power play. The two stitched a partnership of 128 runs for the first wicket.

After that, Nehal Wadhera and Shreyas Iyer stitched a partnership of 56 runs. Shreyas Iyer was dropped twice by Karun Nair, and the PBKS captain brought his half-century in 26 balls. He was unbeaten till the end with the score of 71 runs and created history as PBKS chased down 265 runs with one over to spare.

PBKS creates a new record

PBKS have just chased down the highest ever total in IPL history, breaking their previous record where the side chased down the target of 262 runs back in 2024 at the Eden Gardens, where Jonny Bairstow scored a century.

Today, it was the openers of PBKS who yet again gave them a brilliant start, scoring more than 100 runs. They were absolutely brilliant in the match. PBKS with this win still remain unbeaten in the league and at the top of the table.

Priyansh Arya, after the match, said, "We just felt that we could score a hundred in the powerplay. The pitch was very good. Initially, we thought they would make 240, which we could chase down. I was having a lot of fun [watching Prabh hitting sixes]. Ricky sir had said that if we play our best game, we could chase this down. Just have some self-belief."
