Former India National Cricket Team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin talked about the decision to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain of Team India for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said that the team has made the player vice-captain who will be the sure shot pick in the XI.
India National Cricket Team recently announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Young batter Shubman Gill was given the vice-captaincy role and will be serving as a deputy of Rohit in the tournament.

But Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma reportedly took the decision, keeping the future in mind. Shubman was included in the leadership group after the T20 World Cup 2024 and was made vice-captain of the team in white-ball formats and selectors retained him for the tournament.

Ravichandran Ashwin talked about the decision to give Shubman Gill vice-captaincy, saying that he won't be commenting if it's the right call or not. He stressed that the batter was vice-captain in Sri Lanka as well and added that it was a futuristic call. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
“I don't want to go into whether the decision is right or wrong but the point that was taken was right. He was the vice-captain in the last series and he has also been given the post sometimes in Test matches as well, although I could be wrong there.
"This is a very futuristic call. They are looking at who could be the leader in the future. Now you said Axar Patel is vice-captain in T20s. (But) there can be a competition between Axar Patel and Jadeja for the same spot."

Ravichandran Ashwin, while talking about doubts over the place of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the XI, said that the player who will be 100% in the XI has been made the vice-captain. He added that the stability is good in the team and Gill can learn from seniors. He added:
"Between Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, the latter is the incumbency keeper. Rishabh and KL could both play together as well. But the player who is 100 per cent going to be there in the eleven has been made the vice-captain.
“The stability is good at the moment and if for some reason Shubman has to captain in the future, then he can lean on people like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah - there are many people."
