India National Cricket Team Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has made a massive statement on the modern-day batting greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of their comeback to international cricket.
Shubman Gill said that any captain in the world would be privileged to have the ultra-experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli by his side, and their presence would benefit the team.
We just want them to go out there and do their thing, do their magic - Shubman Gill
Very soon, two of the best batters of modern-day cricket - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli - will return to action in international cricket after being out for a while.
As Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test and T20I cricket and very few ODIs are played these days, the appearance of the duo will be very limited in international cricket till the time they are active.
They are set to tour Australia for a high-octane three-match ODI series, and all the stadiums have been sold out as fans are excited to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in action.
Speaking on JioHotstar after the second Test against the West Indies, Shubman Gill said that he is expecting Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to do their magic on the Australia tour and expressed his desire to see them in the squad for a long time. He said:
“(On RoKo) Expectations, I mean… They are someone who’s won many matches for us in the past, and they’ve been playing for India in the past 10-15 years, and winning matches for us. The experience they bring to the table is something every captain or every team wants, and that’s what we’re looking forward to. We just want them to go out there and do their thing, do their magic."
Although Shubman Gill wants to have Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli by his side, head coach Gautam Gambhir has denied guaranteeing them a spot in the team for the ICC World Cup 2027 and hinted at an uncertain ODI future for the duo.
I think we’ve been playing one of the best ODI cricket in the past 2-3 years - Shubman Gill
The ODI series between India and Australia will be played on October 19, 23, and 25, with Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney hosting the matches. Also, it will be the first ODI series that India will play under newly-appointed skipper Shubman Gill. Talking about the series, Gill said:
“(On IND vs AUS series) – I think we’ve been playing one of the best ODI cricket in the past 2-3 years, and nothing changes for us.
"I think it’s more or less the same team that we are playing. So, very excited to go out there and play in Australia."
From Asia Cup to here, it was a very good turnaround - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill further said that he likes to focus on the basics while switching formats and adapting to them, and this works very well for him. He said:
“From Asia Cup to here, it was a very good turnaround. Especially, it’s the first time we finished the Asia Cup, and in two or three days, we were playing a Test match that was new for me. But I think going back to the basics of a particular format, there’s something that I think works for me, and whenever you’re switching formats, like what are the base of that format, is something that I go back to, and I think that works for me.”
