Young Indian opener Shubman Gill recently opened up about being retired hurt during the semi-final against New Zealand in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Shubman Gill attributed the cramps to the aftermath of a recent dengue infection that he experienced last month.
Shubman Gill had to retire hurt during the semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium due to cramps. He scored 79 runs off 65 balls, but the Mumbai heat and humidity took a toll on him. The batter couldn’t continue to bat and was replaced by Shreyas Iyer.
I’ve Lost Muscle Mass – Shubman Gill
In the post-match press conference, Shubman Gill disclosed that he experienced cramps and pulled his hamstring. Gill stated that he lost muscle mass due to dengue, which affected his endurance, causing cramps sooner than usual in humid conditions.
“It started with cramps and I pulled my hamstring. It was humid out there and also after the effects of dengue. I will be okay for finals,” Gill said.
“I have not really adjusted anything in terms of my batting. Because I’ve lost a bit of muscle mass, the reserve that I had before dengue, it has decreased. You do get cramps while playing for long in such humid conditions, but generally, that happens after a long period of time, not so soon. I’ve lost muscle mass due to which that reserve has gone down,” he further stated.
The 24-year-old came to the crease in the 50th over of the match following the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. The right-handed batter ended his inning with a score of 80 runs off 66 deliveries, including eight boundaries and three maximums in the knockout game.
