KL Rahul Completes 4000 Runs in Test Cricket in Kolkata

KL Rahul added another milestone to his career by becoming the 18th Indian cricketer to cross 4000 runs in Test cricket. He reached the landmark on Day 2 of the first Test with a boundary off Marco Jansen in the opening over.

Rahul resumed his innings alongside Washington Sundar, who had come in at number three after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early dismissal on Day 1.

Since his debut in 2014, Rahul has been asked to bat at different positions. He took 115 innings and 3977 days to reach the 4000-run milestone, becoming the third slowest Indian to do so after former captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.

Rahul has been in exceptional form in recent times. Since January 2024, he has averaged over 50 in Test cricket and is currently India’s top red-ball run-getter among active players, surpassing Ravindra Jadeja’s tally of 3990 runs.

The right-handed batter was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj. He scored 39 runs off 119 balls, including four boundaries.

South Africa Bowled Out for Just 155 Runs in First Innings

The match began with another toss loss for captain Shubman Gill, as Temba Bavuma chose to bat first at Eden Gardens. Openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton added 57 runs for the first wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah removed both openers in successive overs to give India control. Kuldeep Yadav then dismantled the middle order, dismissing Wiaan Mulder and Bavuma to leave South Africa reeling.

The Proteas were bowled out for 159 in 55 overs, with Bumrah taking a five-wicket haul. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each. In response, India reached 37 for 1 at stumps, with KL Rahul and Washington Sundar at the crease.
