Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reportedly planned to acquire star Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, which is likely to take place in December.

However, Gujarat Titans (GT), led by Shubman Gill, rejected their trade proposal, which is an early blow to the Chennai-based franchise.

The five-time champions are eyeing Sundar as a potential replacement for their senior all-rounders for the next season.

With Ravichandran Ashwin retired and Ravindra Jadeja involved in an ongoing trade deal with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), the Super Kings are left with only a few frontline spinners in their squad.

Washington Sundar’s Records in the Indian Premier League

Washington Sundar made his IPL debut for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2017. He has taken 39 wickets in 66 matches at an economy rate of 7.69. The all-rounder has scored 511 runs at an average of 15.5 and a strike rate of 126.17.

The Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans secured his services for ₹3.2 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Sundar scored 133 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 166.25 and took just two wickets with an economy rate of 10.24.

The Chennai-born off-spinner took eight wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 6.16 during his debut season. Following that, he represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2018 to 2021 and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) between 2022 and 2024 before moving to the Gujarat Titans.

Chennai Super Kings Face Spin Dilemma Ahead of IPL 2026

According to ESPNcricinfo, the Chennai Super Kings are set to acquire Sanju Samson in a trade of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals before the November 15 retention deadline.

In such a scenario, Chennai will face a shortage of quality spinners, with only Noor Ahmad and Shreyas Iyer remaining as frontline options. The inclusion of Rachin Ravindra will also depend on whether the franchise decides to retain him.

Given Chepauk’s traditionally spin-friendly conditions, CSK has relied on quality spinners such as Imran Tahir, Moeen Ali, and Harbhajan Singh. However, Jadeja’s departure could leave the five-time champions in a difficult position ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

Chennai Super Kings Denied Washington Sundar Trade by Shubman Gill's side

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rohit Juglan from RevSportz revealed that the Gujarat Titans turned down two trade proposals from the Chennai Super Kings. The Shubman Gill-led team rejected a player-for-player swap and an all-cash offer.

“Gujarat has rejected two types of offers. The first was a player-to-player trade swap, which has been terminated and the second was an all-cash deal, but that too was not accepted,” Juglan said.

Sundar was last seen in action during the five-match T20I series against Australia. He scored an unbeaten 49 off 23 balls and took 3 wickets for just 3 runs in the third and fourth T20Is. The off-spinning all-rounder has scored 1,489 runs and taken 118 wickets in 158 T20 games.

Shubman Gill and Ashish Nehra have been calling shots at the Gujarat Titans as far as players' status is concerned. India's all-format captaincy has come to Shubman Gill because of his exploits with GT.
