It was a sad end to Shubman Gill’s innings on Day 4 of the third IND vs ENG Test. The latter wasn’t able to convert his overnight score of 65 to a hundred and unfortunately was run out for 91 runs. He also became the sixth Indian batsman to get run out in the 90s during a Test match. The last was former Indian captain MS Dhoni who got run out on 99 against England in 2012.
On the last ball of the 64th over, Kuldeep Yadav came down the track and hit a shot, which landed in front of the mid-on fielder Ben Stokes. Shubman Gill called for a run, but unfortunately, he had to turn back as the single wasn’t there. Stokes aimed a bullet throw at the non-striker’s end, which landed in the hands of bowler Tom Hartley. Gill brought in the dive, but till that time Hartley had already removed the bails and it was an unfortunate end to Gill’s knock.
Shubman Gill was furious and slammed his bat onto the ground, on the other hand, his partner Kuldeep Yadav was also on his toes and seemed disappointed. Gill looked good for a hundred and it could have been back-to-back hundreds for the right-handed batter. Before getting out, Gill had added 55 runs from 98 balls for the 3rd wicket along with Kuldeep.
Shubman Gill joins greats in an unfortunate record list
Shubman Gill also joined the likes of legendary Indian batsmen such as Dilip Vengsarkar, Vinoo Mankad, and Ajay Jadeja, who got run out in the 90s during a Test match. The list is as follows:
- Vinoo Mankad 96 vs WI, 1953
- ML Jaisimha 99 vs PAK,1960
- D Vengsarkar 90 vs SL, 1982
- A Jadeja 96 vs WI, 1997
- MS Dhoni 99 vs ENG, 2012
- S Gill 91 vs ENG, 2024
It was a decent start for India on Day 4 of the third IND vs ENG Test match as both Kuldeep Yadav and Shubman Gill began the day by playing some decent shots. While Gill was dismissed when India had put up 246 runs on the board, in a matter of 12 runs, Kuldeep as well marked his way back to the dressing room for 27 runs from 91 balls.
Now the onus will be on Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, who will be aiming to stretch India’s lead to over 500 runs. The batsmen showed brilliant batting displays during the first innings wherein Sarfaraz scored a half-century whereas, Jurel also played a decent 40-odd run knock. Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a ton in the first innings is also another batsman to watch out for in the second innings.
The IND vs ENG Test match has been full of twists and turns, as on the first day it looked like, the hosts were bossing the game, visitors made a scintillating comeback at the end of Day 2 and were ahead in the match. However, India regained control on Day 3 and now have the most chance of winning the match.
India would be aiming to gain a 2-1 lead in the series by winning the third and moving to Ranchi, where the 4th Test match of the series will be played.
