After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the ongoing India vs Bangladesh Test in Chennai, Shubman Gill has bounced back in style. The right-handed batsman scored a brilliant unbeaten century in the second innings of the Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
He was dismissed for an eight-ball duck by Hasan Mahmud on day one of the Test. However, the Punjab star made amends for his failure in a brilliant fashion by playing an impressive 119-run knock. Just like the first innings, Gill had to walk out to bat quite early in the second too as Rohit Sharma was out for only 5.
With Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Virat Kohli (17) departing cheaply as well, the onus was on Gill to bail the team out of trouble. And the youngster did not disappoint. He and Rishabh Pant put India in the driver's seat by scoring brilliant centuries.
They shared a 167-run stand for the fourth wicket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz broke the stand by dismissing Pant on 109. On the other hand, Gill remained unbeaten on 119 runs as India declared their second innings on 287/4. His knock came off 176 balls and was studded with 10 fours and 4 sixes.
Shubman Gill joins the elite list:
The duck in the first innings and the brilliant century in the second innings have helped Shubman Gill join an elite list. He has become only the ninth Indian cricketer to score a duck in the first innings of a Test before scoring a century in the second innings. The first Indian player to achieve the feat was Madhav Apte.
Apte was out for a duck before scoring an unbeaten 163 against West Indies in 1953 in Port of Spain. Gundappa Viswanath was the second Indian to achieve the milestone before the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, and other greats did it.
Among active Indian cricketers, only Virat Kohli and Gill now hold the record of scoring a duck and century in the same Test.
List of Indian players who have scored a duck and a century in the same Test:
- Madhav Apte
- Gundappa Viswanath
- Sunil Gavaskar
- Dilip Vengsarkar
- Mohammad Azharuddin
- Sachin Tendulkar
- Shikhar Dhawan
- Virat Kohli
- Shubman Gill
Today, Shubman Gill became the ninth Indian to make a duck and a 100 in a Test match. The list has the biggest names in Indian Test cricket.
