Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has picked Shubman Gill over Babar Azam. Kaneria believes that Gill can attack the spinners by using his feet whereas Babar takes a lot of time to understand which way the ball is going.

Babar has been under tremendous pressure over the past few months. The star Pakistan batter is not only going through poor form but his captaincy has been under the scanner as well.

Babar had a disappointing series against Bangladesh recently where he scored just 64 runs in 4 innings at an average of 16. His highest score in the series was 31 and it was easily one of the worst Test series of his international career.

Danish Kaneria picks Shubman Gill over Babar Azam

During a recent chat with Sports Yaari, Danish Kaneria was asked to pick one out of Babar Azam and Shubman Gill. Surprisingly, Kaneria picked Gill and even reasoned his opinion. The former Pakistan leg-spinner claimed that Gill is classy and looks pleasing to the eye whenever he scores runs, unlike Babar who has no guarantee that he will score runs or not.

"Shubman Gill (on Babar Azam vs Shubman Gill). Shubman Gill is a class batter. He looks good whenever he scores runs. On the other hand, there is no guarantee when Babar Azam will get out. There is no guarantee about his consistency," Kaneria opined.

Kaneria further said that Gill uses his feet against the spinners and scores all around the wicket. According to him, Babar takes too much time to understand a spinner, which makes him susceptible to that kind of bowling.

"Shubman Gill at least uses his feet against the spinners. He hits them on all the sides of the wicket whether it's extra cover, deep midwicket, or cow corner," Kaneria said.

"On the other hand, Babar first looks for the ball and check which way it's turning. By the time he understands a spinner, his work will be over," he added.

Babar Azam's recent form

Babar had a tough time even in the T20 World Cup 2024. Although he scored 122 runs in 4 innings, he scored those runs at a strike rate of 101.66. His low strike rate was questioned by experts and former cricketers who stated that he does not play with intent.

Babar Azam's poor form with the bat has badly affected Pakistan's form too. This shows how much his team is dependent on him. Pakistan recently lost 0-2 to Bangladesh in a home Test series, and Babar failed to make a significant score even once in the whole series. The last time Babar scored a Test fifty was way back in December 2022 against New Zealand.

Shubman Gill's growth as a batter

On the other hand, Gill has made a place for himself in all the formats of the game. He is currently India's vice-captain in the white-ball formats and is slowly establishing himself in the Tests as well.

Gill will be in action in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh where he will be aiming to stake a claim for himself in India's Test team. A technically sound player, Gill can be tough to stop when he gets going. Although he needs improvement in some aspects, he is already seen as India's future.
