Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly opened up about the transition in the Indian team ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia. Sourav Ganguly also made a bold prediction about young Indian batters Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill in the highly anticipated Test series.

The Indian team secured a 1-1 draw during the 2003-04 series under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly. They registered their first Test series victory on the 2018-19 tour under Virat Kohli. The Men in Blue then continued their domination in the subsequent tour in Australia by recording a 2-1 victory.

Shubman Gill And Rishabh Pant Can Go To The Next Level - Sourav Ganguly

In his recent interview with the TOI, Sourav Ganguly said that he doesn’t want to comment on whether the Indian team is undergoing a transition. However, Ganguly said that Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill could go to the next level as senior batters at the end of the series.

"I don’t want to get into the talks of transition since I am not privy to what is happening in the system," Ganguly told the Times of India.

"If you talk about the next generation, then there is already Rishabh Pant who is a proven performer in overseas conditions for some years now. I believe a lot will revolve around him. I have a feeling Shubman Gill and Pant can go to the next level as senior batters at the end of the series," he added.

Yashashvi Jaiswal Is A Very Good Prospect - Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is confident in India's batting lineup, including experienced players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Rohit Sharma. The former Indian skipper also described Yashasvi Jaiswal as a very good prospect for the future.

"Talking about a settled batting lineup, I don’t see anything drastically unsettled. There’s Kohli, KL Rahul, Pant, Gill and Rohit who will hopefully join the team as soon as possible. They have toured and played a lot of cricket together. Yashashvi Jaiswal is a very good prospect too," Ganguly opined.

Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Perth Test After Thumb Injury

Shubman Gill is uncertain for the first Test match after injuring his finger while fielding during a match simulation against India 'A' in Perth. The Indian team management will assess the severity of the injury before making a decision. Gill is expected to recover in time for the second Test in Adelaide.

Gill impressed during his debut tour in 2020-21 with decent performances against bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. Also, he recently scored a century in the first Test against Bangladesh and added 90 runs in the third Test against New Zealand, where India suffered a 0-3 whitewash.

Rishabh Pant was one of the few positives for India during their home series against New Zealand. The left-handed batter was the top run-scorer for the Indian cricket team. Pant amassed 261 runs in six innings at an average of 43.50. He scored three half-centuries, with his highest score being 99 runs.
