Indian skipper Shubman Gill had to be admitted to a hospital after the batter retired hurt at the Eden Gardens. The Indian team have, however, denied any workload issues and has claimed it to be a bad night's sleep.
As India and South Africa clashed for the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Captain Shubman Gill faced a major setback in the form of an injury. The injury came after he faced just three balls in the innings.
The BCCI had reported that Shubman Gill's neck spasm would be monitored, and his return would only be planned accordingly. Shubman Gill did not come out to bat in the innings, as he was retired hurt, and then Rishabh Pant has been captaining the team in his absence.
Shubman Gill rushed to the Kolkata hospital with Neck spasm
Shubman Gill did not look comfortable while taking the field with the willow and retired hurt on four after having faced just three balls in the innings. He walked off clutching his neck with his hand after the physios came to check on him.
According to PTI reports, Gill was stretchered out in an ambulance to a hospital in Kolkata, with his neck in a cervical collar, several hours after he retired hurt while batting at the Eden Gardens.
The concerns have been raised since it was confirmed that he had been taken to a hospital in Kolkata, despite the BCCI claiming that the cricketer has only been ruled out due to neck spasms.
Morne Morkel did not consider Gill's fitness as a workload issue
Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has refused to put Shubman Gill's neck stiffness down to his extra workload in the recent tournaments and series. He refused to believe it was any major issue and claimed it was a bad night's sleep.
“Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night’s sleep," Morkel said, when asked if Gill’s packed multi-format calendar was a factor, as quoted by PTI. “I don’t think it’s, or we can put it down to the load," he added.
“Gill is a very fit guy, he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us. Another sort of partnership with him batting around was going to be needed for us at the time, and… just bad timing," he said.
India on the route to another Test win under Shubman Gill's captaincy
The Indian bowlers dominated on Day 1, with Jasprit Bumrah picking five wickets in the first innings at the Eden Gardens. However, despite a good hand by the bowlers, the Indian batsmen failed to impress and were bowled out for just 189 runs, securing a lead of just 30.
The second innings of the Proteas saw another major collapse, as seven wickets fell for just 93 runs on the board. Ravindra Jadeja picked 4 wickets and Kuldeep Yadav struck twice, with a wicket for Axar Patel as well, which restricted them to a 63-run lead.
