Former Indian cricketer and commentator Ajay Jadeja has welcomed Shubman Gill wholeheartedly as Indian cricket’s next superstar. Shubman Gill has already taken over as India’s Test captain, and now he is also serving as the T20I vice-captain.
The 25-year-old will soon be India’s all-format captain. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement, Gill was named India’s Test captain, and he cemented his place at No. 4.
Ajay Jadeja hails Shubman Gill as Indian cricket’s “Chosen One”
In his first series as India captain, he amassed 754 runs and led India to a historic 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, proving he is a match-winner and a leader in the making.
The right-handed batter has also made his comeback to India’s T20I setup and continued his red-hot form in their first Asia Cup 2025 clash against the UAE on September 10. Gill played an explosive knock of an unbeaten 20 runs off just 9 balls as India chased down 58 runs in just 27 balls in Dubai.
After this Asia Cup 2025 clash, Ajay Jadeja said that Gill is Indian cricket’s “chosen one,” saying the young star enjoys immense privilege because of the faith the BCCI and selectors have in him.
Ajay Jadeja explains why Shubman Gill is getting advantages
The former Indian batter also mentioned how the Punjab lad was selected ahead of other talented players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
Ajay Jadeja said on the Sony Sports Network: “Shubman Gill is the chosen one of Indian cricket. Everyone already has high expectations of him. He has a special talent; there is no two ways about it. If they have picked him ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal and, as many felt, Sanju Samson, you can imagine how extremely privileged he is.
And the only reason is that people think he is in it for the long haul. He has the consistency; he is looked at as India's future captain. That's why he is getting advantages.”

Ajay Jadeja hails Shubman Gill for repaying faith, says he feels the pressure of privilege
Jadeja pointed out that the pressure on Gill isn’t about keeping his place in the Indian cricket team at all, but the privilege he has got. The cricket pundit further noted, “That's the only pressure he will feel, of privilege, not about his place in the team.”
The former Indian batter also praised Gill for justifying the faith shown in him. He noted that in a lineup with eight batters, consistency can be tough, but Gill’s outing against the UAE shows his potential. Jadeja feels Gill’s strike rate will improve with time.
Jadeja signed off by saying, “Whatever we saw from this little innings from him, he has repaid the faith. Because when you play eight batters, your own consistency won’t matter. You are expected to do well, but that six that he hit, I think, going forward, his strike rate will improve, but consistency might dip a little.”
Notably, the Men in Blue are gearing up for the big game in the Asia Cup 2025 against the archrivals Pakistan on Sunday, September 14, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
