According to a latest report, the India National Cricket Team Test captain Shubman Gill is not a certainty in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in T20I format.

Shubman Gill might struggle to make it to the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 because, reportedly, the T20I team is well set, with no room for him.

He is undoubtedly one of the best batters in world cricket currently and is among the few players who are looked at as the future superstars across all formats of the game.

Gill was recently appointed as the India Test captain after Rohit Sharma stepped down from the role, and is also in line to take over the ODI captaincy once Rohit steps down.

In the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Shubman Gill looked exceptional with the bat and scored big runs for India, finishing as the leading run-getter in the series.

He scored 754 runs for the India National Cricket Team in 10 innings at a highly impressive average of 75.40 and helped his team draw the series 2-2.

Shubman Gill is not a certainty in India's Asia Cup 2025 squad

After his heroics in the five-match Test series against England, reports emerged claiming that the selectors are highly impressed with Shubman Gill and he will be added to India's Asia Cup 2025 squad as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel in the role.

According to the latest report in RevSportz, Gill might not find it easy to get a place in what is looked at as a “set team” because Gautam Gambhir believes in continuity and the likes of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma haven't done anything wrong to be replaced by India Test captain in the playing XI.

"Sources close to developments say that Sanju Samson has scored three hundreds in his last 10 T20Is and has done well as an opener. It wouldn’t be fair to push him down the order and accommodate Gill.

"Abhishek Sharma is the number-one-ranked T20 batter in the world, while Tilak Varma is the second-ranked batter. India, under Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, has sought to give clarity and continuity to the players. In fact, even Gill had spoken about continuity in England in the red-ball format and that’s what could now be a feature of Indian cricket going forward," the report written by veteran journalist Boria Majumdar read.

IPL performances not the selection criteria

Shubman Gill is no mug with the bat in T20 cricket and has scored 650, 426, and 890 runs in the last three seasons with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Gujarat Titans (GT).

However, just IPL performances aren't the criteria for selection, and the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the playing XI would be an injustice to the other performers.

The likes of Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, and Rinku Singh didn't have a very good IPL 2025, but they are expected to be backed because they did well for India.

Coming back to Gill, he has scored 578 runs for India in 21 T20I matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27.
