Former England skipper Eoin Morgan was in awe of Ben Stokes’s captaincy during Day 3 of the second Test against India. He praised the all-rounder for the dismissal of Shubman Gill and pointed out how the batter fell to trap.

Ben Stokes as a captain was sensational on Day 3 of the ongoing game. The all-rounder was spot-on with his field placements. One of the highlights of his sensational outing was when he set the trap for Shubman Gill and forced the batter to do something different, which led to his downfall.

Shubman Gill played a glorious innings for the team and led the charge for the team, bailing them out of trouble. He returned to form and slammed a sensational century that helped the team take a big lead of 398 runs on the board.

Shubman Gill slammed a sensational ton before he was trapped in LBW by Shoaib Bashir. It was purely a result of the field placements. England skipper Ben Stokes brought the field up, which left the off-side field empty.

This made Shubman Gill play the reverse sweep but the ball lobbed up and was caught by Ben Foakes. The on-field umpire didn’t give it out. England took a review and had their man. This made many applaud Ben Stokes for his heroics.

Even Eoin Morgan was in awe, saying that it was a wicket created by Ben Stokes. He pointed out how the England skipper enforced the change in the shot and made the batter fall into the trap. Speaking on air during the Day 3 of the match, he explained:

“A wicket purely created by Ben Stokes. Numerous changes in the field. The stacked leg-side field enforces the change in shot, the change in mindset from Shubman Gill [who has] already played unbelievably well. Stokes knows it. England know it. He’s fallen for the trap.

Ravi Shastri, who was doing commentary with Eoin Morgan, also admitted that Ben Stokes made Shubman Gill think differently. He stated: “Yes, they made him think differently. His strength is to use his feet, hit down the ground.”

It is a huge, huge skill, and tough to play against at times – Eoin Morgan on Ben Stokes

Eoin Morgan further lavished rich praise on Ben Stokes for his captaincy, saying that it was like a fisherman setting the lure without the rod. He further added that MS Dhoni used to do the same for India and it is like playing with batters’ ego. He added:

Certainly on numerous occasions Ben Stokes has implemented changes in fields. Almost fisherman-like – setting the lure, not needing the rod. The fish has jumped into the boat.

“We’ve seen it for many, many years for India – MS Dhoni, doing the exact same thing, recognising opportunity when nothing is on offer. Playing on batters’ ego in many ways. Almost creating something from nothing. It is a huge, huge skill, and tough to play against at times.”

Shubman Gill ended with the knock of 104 runs off 147 balls. The batter slammed 11 fours and 2 sixes in his innings. At stumps on Day 3, visitors were 67 for one and still are 332 runs behind.
