Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has opined that after quitting the T20 Internationals, captaincy Virat Kohli will play the same role as Sachin Tendulkar used to play in the team, and he will offer his suggestions to the captain.

Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the new T20 Internationals captain of the India National Cricket Team. He will start his tenure as a permanent T20I skipper in the upcoming series against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand, which will commence from 17 November.

Meanwhile, Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar played under several captains like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni, and he always used to offer his suggestions to the captain. But, in the end, it was the captain’s call whether he wanted to implement the suggestions or not.

“India have got a new captain and a vice-captain and since Kohli will be around, he will certainly offer his suggestions – which he feels is right. See, even Tendulkar played for so long and did the same under so many captains.

“All the time, he would share his thoughts with the captain and then it was up to the skipper to implement it. Which is why Kohli said something great when he said that he and Rohit are the leaders and as long as they are around, they will help the youngsters and the captain,” speaking on Cricbuzz Sehwag stated.

I Told Selectors It Is Better That You Groom A Youngster So When MS Dhoni Leaves, He Becomes The Captain – Virender Sehwag

Sehwag further recalled that in 2007 when MS Dhoni was appointed as the captain, he was given the vice-captain’s role, and he requested the selectors that being a senior, he will anyways perform his role for the team, and he wanted a youngster to take up the deputy’s role so that it becomes easy for him to become captain when Dhoni leaves.

However, Sehwag said that the board did not give his suggestions much attention.

“When MS Dhoni became the captain and I was made the vice-captain, I told the selectors and board that irrespective of me being the vice-captain.

“I would perform my responsibilities so it is better that you groom a youngster so when Dhoni leaves, he becomes the captain and not me. However, my suggestion was not heard but now with Kohli saying such things, it’s a good sign,” he said.
