SL vs AFG: Afghanistan Fined 20% Of Their Match Fees For Slow Over-Rate In First ODI Against Sri Lanka

The ongoing ODI series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka has been enthralling to watch as the competition between bat and ball has been exciting. The series currently stands at 1-1 with the decider set to be played on 7th June. 

While the result of the first game went in the favor of Afghanistan, it wasn’t a fruitful end for them as they have fined 20% of their match fees due to a slow over-rate. They were one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration as per the ICC.

Ranjan Madugalle of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction on the offense per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi accepted the sanction and the charge was leveled by On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Prageeth Rambukwella, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Lyndon Hannibal.

SL vs AFG: Afghanistan thumps Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in first ODI 

Afghanistan produced a magnificent effort in the first ODI as they thumped Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Opting to bowl, they displayed a  collective bowling effort as every bowler chipped in with wickets and bundled out the opposition for just 268 runs. Fareed Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 2/43.

While chasing the target, opener Ibrahim Zadran played a sensational knock of 98 runs and took his team close to the target. He was well supported by Rahmat Shah, who made 55, and Hashmatullah Shahidi, who amassed 38 runs, as Afghanistan completed a comfortable 6-wicket win. 

Sri Lanka then staged a dominant comeback in the second game as they pounded Afghanistan by massive 132 runs to level the series 1-1. The series now heads to Decider, which will be played on 7th June.
