SL vs AFG: Matheesha Pathirana Receives His One-Day International Cap From Skipper Dasun Shanaka In The First Match Against Afghanistan

Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana made his One Day International (ODI) debut during the first match against Afghanistan on Friday, June 2. Sri Lanka is currently hosting the three-match series against Afghanistan at Hambantota from June 2 to 7.

The 20-year-old made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in Dubai during the Asia Cup in 2022. The slingy pacer was part of the limited-overs squad during the tour of New Zealand. However, he didn’t get a chance to play a single match in both the ODI and T20 series.

Speaking at the toss, skipper Dasun Shanaka stated that Pathirana would make his ODI debut along with Dushan Hemantha. Pathirana received his cap from Shanaka.

“It’s a nice deck. We would have bowled as well. The youngsters didn’t perform well so the experienced Dimuth is ideal at the top. Two debutants – Dushan Hemantha and Matheesha Pathirana,” said Shanaka.

Matheesha Pathirana impressed with his bowing while representing the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). The 20-year-old bowled well as a death bowler throughout the tournament.

The young fast bowler missed the first few matches due to international commitments. He took 19 wickets in 12 games at an average of 19.53 and an incredible economy rate of 8.01 runs per over despite bowling in the toughest phase.

Matheesha Pathirana will be seen bowling in the second innings as Afghanistan opted to field after winning the toss.
