SL vs AFG: Rashid Khan Ruled Out Of The First Two ODIs Against Sri Lanka Due To Lower Back Injury

Afghanistan’s ace spinner Rashid Khan has been ruled out of the first two ODIs of the three-match series against Sri Lanka, which will be played between June 2 and 7. Rashid Khan will miss the first two matches of the series due to a lower back injury but is expected to play in the final match.

The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led team will tour Sri Lanka for a three-match series, with the first ODI scheduled to be played on June 2 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota. The remaining two matches will be played at the same venue on June 4 and 7, respectively.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) took to Twitter to provide an update on Rashid Khan’s injury status. The board announced on Wednesday, May 31, that Rashid Khan sustained a low back injury.

“Low Back Injury rules Rashid Khan out of the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka. Afghanistan’s Bowling Ace @rashidkhan_19 has sustained a low back injury which forces him out of the first two games against @OfficialSLC. Get well soon Champ!” ACB tweeted.

“The Team Physio’s report confirms the injury and states that he will remain under full medical observation and is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7.”

Afghanistan included Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, and Mohammad Nabi as the other spin bowling options in the squad. Rashid’s injury will add extra pressure on Mujeeb and Nabi, who were experienced spinners. Noor was impressed with his bowling in the recently concluded IPL 2023.

Rashid Khan played a key role in the success of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2023. The leg-spinner was the joint second-highest wicket-taker with 27 wickets in 17 matches at an economy rate of 8.24. The 24-year-old took a hat-trick against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the event.
