"Sorry They Couldn't..." - Kapil Dev's Message To Indian Team After CWC 2023 Final Loss

Former Indian World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev shared his thoughts on India’s memorable World Cup campaign in 2023. The team stayed unbeaten in their run to the final but lost to Australia on Sunday, November 19.

India’s decade-long wait for their next ICC title continued in the process. Their next chance to end the drought is the T20 World Cup 2024 to be played in June next year. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma finished as the top two run-getters but could not win the trophy for their country.

Indian Team Played Well: Kapil Dev

Meanwhile, Kapil Dev who led India to their first-ever World Cup win in 1983 echoed the same sentiments that the players were feeling after the hurtful loss to Australia.

“Remember that you have to move on in life. Another thing I’ve learnt over a period of time is to never talk about your time. We have moved on. We are not good enough. The young people are much better than us. The only thing we have – we have experience to guide them in the right direction. They are far better, but we can guide them better, that’s all, “Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by Sportstar during a book launch.

“Today’s cricketers, sorry they couldn’t win the World Cup, but they played well. I know in our mind, winning is everything. But the way of play is more important. Other people had also come here to play. Other people played better (on the) last day. We should respect that. I’m disappointed and disheartened that they played so well and yet they couldn’t win the trophy. But (it) doesn’t matter. Let’s hope what we didn’t understand this time, we’ll learn and do it better. That’s the way we are,” he added further.

India lost the WTC final earlier this year also to Australia. This was their second World Cup final against Australia and the first time since 2003. There were high hopes of an Indian win but Australia were the better team on the night.
