Former Pakistan National Cricket Team captain Rashid Latif has opined that the arrival of the former India National Cricket Team captain Sourav Ganguly in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) triggered the change in Indian cricket.

During a discussion with former India National Cricket Team player Ajay Jadeja on his YouTube channel, Latif talked about former India National Cricket Team captain Virat Kohli’s career trajectory over the past year.

“They (India) took Dhoni as mentor in the World Cup. Just before that, he (Kohli) announced that he would step down as T20I captain. That was very shocking for us and we didn’t know what was happening behind the scenes.

“Then, the team goes to South Africa and Rohit gets unfit, and KL Rahul becomes the captain. And there, Kohli left the Test captaincy as well. So a lot of things were happening,” Latif told Jadeja on his official YouTube channel, Caught Behind.

Notably, Kohli had announced ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE that he would step down as the T20I captain of the Indian team after the marquee event.

Later, Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain ahead of the South Africa tour. Also, after the conclusion of the three-match Test series in South Africa, Kohli relinquished Test captaincy. Rohit Sharma took over as the all-format captain after Kohli departed from the role.

I think there was something brewing up behind the scenes – Rashid Latif

Latif further said that after the appointment of Ganguly changes began to happen as Ravi Shastri left after the ICC Men’s T20 World 2021 and Rahul Dravid was named as new head coach. The 53-year-old opined that “something was brewing up behind the scenes” and Kohli was deliberately troubled.

“Then, if I go back to the 2019 World Cup, Ravi Shastri was the head coach there. What I observe from all this is that Sourav’s arrival triggered the change. Shastri left, then Rahul Dravid came, and Vikram Rathour was already there. I think there was something brewing up behind the scenes. It felt that a player who was at the high of his life was deliberately troubled,” Latif further said.
