Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played from February 10 to February 26 on home soil. Sune Luus will lead the team in the absence of Dane van Niekerk at the marquee event.
South African captain Dane van Niekerk was left out of the squad as she did not meet the fitness requirements of Cricket South Africa. The 29-year-old played her last international cricket in September 2021. After that, she was ruled out of the 50-over World Cup due to an ankle injury.

Dane van Niekerk Did Not Meet The Minimum Requirement
“Dane was given an extensive opportunity to meet the minimum criteria for the fitness benchmark,” Clinton du Preez, women’s selection convener said on Tuesday. “She recently did another fitness test and did not meet the minimum criteria and that’s why she has missed out.”
“Dane did not meet the minimum requirement for the 2-kilometre time trial. The management assisted her into trying to get there but she did not meet the minimum requirement. The skill set of Dane as a cricketer will always be missed on the cricket field. We have reminded her of that. We also appreciate the effort she tried to put into meeting the fitness level.”

South Africa needs to find a good opening partner for Laura Wolvaardt for the World Cup after Lizelle Lee retired from all forms of cricket in July last year. Tazmin Brits played well against the West Indies in the ongoing tri-series, and Anneke Bosch can also be utilized in the top order. Chloe Tryon and Marizanne Kapp provide power in the middle order for the team, while Sune Luus holds the batting order with a mix of force and control.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will begin on February 10 with the hosts, South Africa taking on Sri Lanka in Newlands, Cape Town. The total teams were divided into two groups, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The final of the tournament will be held on February 26.
