The South Africa National Cricket Team will be up against Namibia and Zimbabwe for the white-ball tour to Namibia later this month. Ahead of the three-match ODI series, they have announced the squad. South Africa’s men’s selection panel has today announced the 15-player squad for the tour, with Bjorn Fortuin named captain.
This is a Tri-series as the Proteas take on Namibia and Zimbabwe in a T20 International (T20I) from 28 August - 06 September at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. This will be good practice for the Proteas ahead of the Australia ODI series, scheduled for late September.
South Africa head coach reveals reason behind choosing one squad
The Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad shared his insights on choosing only one squad for the forthcoming ODI and T20I series. He also revealed why they announced Bjorn Fortuin as the captain for the side. They believe that it will be a good opportunity for the young cricketers to gain experience of international cricket.
Head coach Shukri Conrad commented: “We’ve selected one squad for both series as we feel we have all departments well covered and it provides a great opportunity for players to build on their international caps.
“We saw glimpses of what Connor and Nqobani can offer during the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. It was unfortunate that Jordan picked up an injury in the opening match of that series, so we’re looking forward to seeing him get another opportunity at this level.
“This tour has also opened the door for players who have performed domestically. Duan is one of those players. He is a quality all-rounder who has also shown great character for the Titans.“
Bjorn Fortuin's recent form
Shukri Conrad stated that the newly appointed captain Bjorn has been a key player and an experienced leader as well. The 26-year-old has shown amazing consistency in ODIs and T20Is and was crowned Division 1 One Day Cup Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season after leading the Titans to the 50-over triumph with 61* runs in the final against the DP World Lions.
“Bjorn is an experienced player and proven leader who has successfully captained the Lions, and we have every confidence in his ability to lead this group.
Conrad added: “It is always exciting to play against our neighbouring countries, and the first-ever ODI series between South Africa and Namibia adds further significance, especially as we build towards next year’s World Cup.”
Dewald Brevis named in the 15-man squad
Most of the players selected in the series are new; among them, some experienced cricketers like Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi and Kwena Maphaka have been named in the squad as they will bolster the inexperienced squad.
The South African side will remain in the capital city for a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against the hosts from September 9 to 13, which will be the first 50-over series between the two nations.
