Former Australian captain and cricket expert, Aaron Finch, shared his views on the Royal Challengers Bangaluru's (RCB) underwhelming performance in the ongoing IPL 2024. He attributed Bangaluru's struggles to several factors, starting with the team composition at the auction table.

Finch noted that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had significantly focused on strengthening their batting lineup, leaving limited resources for bolstering their bowling department at the auction.

He highlighted the absence of a world-class spinner in the team as a crucial factor, and its impact was well seen in their recent IPL 2024 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

RCB needs a reliable spinner like Sunil Narine

RCB lost their last IPL 2024 match to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a mere 1 run at Eden Gardens, where KKR spin all-rounder Sunil Narine proved decisive. Finch further stressed the need for a reliable spinner to consistently deliver for the RCB.

Furthermore, the former Australian believes that the tactical decisions are also impacting the RCB’s performance in the ongoing IPL 2024, especially their playing XI and players’ positions.

He highlighted the case of Cameron Green, who joined the RCB for a huge INR 17.5 crore and bats in the middle order despite his ideal batting position being at the top of the batting order.

While claiming the RCB isn’t optimizing Green's potential, Finch noted the underwhelming performance of Glenn Maxwell, saying the poor form of match-winners like the Australian all-rounder also influenced the team’s poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2024.

What hurts RCB in the IPL 2024? Aaron Finch explained

Aaron Finch said on Star Sports Press Room, as reported by Hindustan Times: “Apart from their poor strategy on the auction table, I think they have got some issues with playing players out of position at times, I mean Cameron Green to trade for him for such a big price, for such a big percentage of a salary cap, to then bat him in the middle-order, where is not as comfortable as batting at the top is a real strange move.

You're asking a guy to do a job that he is not comfortable with from the start so you're not setting him up for the ultimate success in my opinion. And then obviously Maxi (Maxwell) hasn't gone going either which hurts. When you're looking at match-winners and pure impact on the match and Maxi hasn't quite done that this tournament.”

Notably, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is on the verge of being knocked out of the ongoing IPL 2023, as they have just opened their account in the tournament. The Faf du Plessis-led RCB is currently standing at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table with 2 points from 8 games so far in the tournament.

Only Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik are in good form, while the rest of the RCB players looked out of color this season. RCB will next face the in-form and third-ranked Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing IPL 2024 on Wednesday, April 24, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.
