SRH owner Kavya Maran came out with a few important recommendations namedropping Abhishek Sharma in the meeting that was held between the IPL owners and the BCCI on July 31.
The BCCI along with all the 10 IPL team owners held a meeting in Mumbai to discuss the roadmap of IPL 2025. All the owners were present at the meeting while the Ambanis, the owners of Mumbai Indians attended the meeting via a video conference.
The Impact Player rule and the number of retentions were the two most important topics discussed in the meeting. KKR and SRH were among the franchises who were against the mega auction.
"It takes a lot of time to build a squad and as discussed it also takes quite a bit of time and investment for the younger players to mature. It has taken Abhishek Sharma three years to become consistent with his performances. You would agree that there are many such examples in other teams too" clarifying her take on mega auction.
Thus it was very evident that she was in favour of the mini-auctions that happen every year before the IPL. KKR and SRH were the two teams that played in the final. Both of them wanted to retain the core of the side that took them to the final and hence Maran's take on the matter was very understandable.
The CEO of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise has requested a minimum of seven retentions or Right to Match (RTM) options for an IPL franchise ahead of the mega auction. To add to that she has also suggested the BCCI ban the foreign players who do not turn up to play in the league after enrolling themselves for the auction.
Kavya Maran Stands Firm on RTMs and Player Retention
She stressed the franchises being allowed at least seven retentions or a similar number of RTM's (Right To Match) options.
"We can use it as four retentions and two RTMS, or all six retentions, or all six RTMS, and so on. The choice on whether retention or RTM is used should be with the franchise based on discussions with the player" she said in the meeting.
"There have been numerous instances in the past where a player has preferred to go to the auction when he has felt that the retention amount is on the lower side. There have also been instances where multiple players have felt that they should be the first retention, and if not retained as first, they have asked to be put in the auction instead. To avoid this, we can give the players the chance to either be retained or RTM at the market discovered price, ensuring that the player is not disgruntled about the retention price" she further said to clarify her point.
She further explained how RTM's can help the auction process by allowing the player to get market price in the auction within the restrictions of the purse which allows the purse to dictate terms with the players and not the IPL franchise owners.
"It will also ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of a brand as prestigious as the IPL" she added.
The BCCI came out with a statement where they said that they would evaluate the suggestions made by the franchise owners before making any changes concerning the rules of the tournament and also on the retention policy of players.
