Sri Lanka Cricket Team who had drawn the Test Series by 1-1 against Pakistan in July has requested the ICC to investigate the series. In that Series, Sri Lanka showed great character after losing the 1st Test Match against Pakistan.
The match-fixing allegation has been put by the Parliament opposition member Nalin Bandara who had raised this issue 2 weeks. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is bothered because these allegations can damage its name in World Cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket Asks ICC to Investigate
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a statement on the issue. “The executive committee of SLC decided today to invite Mr Alex Marshall, the General Manager of the ICC anti corruption unit to Sri Lanka to investigate recent allegations of match-fixing made by a parliamentarian regarding the recently concluded Pakistan tour.” said SLC.
“Sri Lanka Cricket, as a full member of the ICC and mandated to uphold the integrity of the game at both the national and international level, believes that it is the correct course of action to take in light of the recent allegations made by the aforementioned parliamentarian, which have caused immense reputational damage to Sri Lanka Cricket and its stakeholders.” it added.
Concern for ICC
ICC would be bothered as now there are questions raised about the game’s integrity. It would be interesting to see whether ICC investigates into this matter as we all know that there is an ICC Anti Corruption department present for every International match.
Sri Lanka Cricket knows very well that their team is in the phase of reconstruction. The team had a topsy-turvy T20 World Cup where they weren’t able to make it to the Semi-Finals as there were high hopes from them after their triumph in Asia Cup 2022. With the ODI Series against Afghanistan set to begin on 25th November (Friday), this investigation can diver the team’s attention from the series. This ODI Series is a part of the World Super League where Sri Lanka is placed precariously in 10th position with 62 points.
