On November 7, 2022, at the Local Court, bail was denied for the cricketer who was accused of engaging in four counts of sexual activity without permission. According to the report, after police arrived at Danushka Gunathilaka’s residence at 2 am, the defence attorney also asked the court to lift the nightly curfew and enforcement restrictions. George Rixon, a lawyer with the DPP, opposed the modification but believed it needed to be implemented to “mitigate the dangers” of additional offences.

“The accused’s aggressive sexual behaviour is of concern,” he said.

Around Christmas of last year, Danushka Gunathilaka received permission to move into a one-bedroom flat in Sydney’s inner west. As a condition of his bail, he earlier turned over his passport and was told not to go near any international departure point.

The Sri Lankan national was told to follow a nocturnal curfew and report to the police every day.

A “friend of a friend” donated a $150,000 guarantee in support of Gunathilaka’s bail, while the cricket player contributed an additional $50,000.
