Sri Lanka Women's World Cup Qualifier Match Aaginst West Indies Called Off Amid Covid Concerns

The Women’s World Cup qualifier match between Sri Lanka and West Indies was called off amid growing covid-19 concerns in the African region. The match was scheduled to be held in Harare but the emergence of a new covid variant has forced the officials to call it off.
Earlier in the day, Thailand vs USA and Pakistan vs Zimbabwe matches went on without a fuss. However, the situation seems to have escalated and there are talks being held to see if the tournament can be scheduled for another time. The final decision will be taken once a meeting is held.

Speaking about the situation, Sri Lanka Cricket CEO, Ashley de Silva, said: “The match has been cancelled, probably due to the Covid situation in the African countries. All teams are still in Zimbabwe, and the ICC is having internal discussions as to how to move forward. We’ll wait for their direction.“
Sri Lankan camp was already hit by Covid after reaching Zimbabwe
The decision to cancel the game was likely further influenced by the fact that a few people in the Sri Lankan were already infected with COVID-19 after landing in Zimbabwe for the qualifiers.

The new covid-19 variant, called ‘Omicron’, is being termed as a major threat because of its fast-spreading nature. It was first detected in South Africa a week ago. Several European regions have announced travel restrictions in place for African nations.
