Veteran Australia batter Steve Smith opened up about his retirement plans ahead of the Test series against Pakistan. He said that he doesn’t like to look too far ahead and believes in enjoying the moment.
Since the last few months, there has been a lot of speculation about Steve Smith’s retirement from cricket. The veteran of 103 Tests has hinted quite a few times about his plan to hang up the boots but he hasn’t given clarity as of yet.
Steve Smith, who arguably is the best Test batter of modern-day cricket, is still fit and batting like a dream. However, with him being in his late 30s and also his colleagues in particular David Warner announcing his retirement, there have been a lot of speculations around his future as well.
As per Steve Smith, he’s not thinking about retirement and is just focussing on the present. He also mentioned that he’s not at all bothered by his retirement talks and is just going about his business day to day. Speaking to Fox Cricket, he explained:
“I really just don’t like to look too far ahead. And, you know, I take it series by series, game by game, and just enjoy myself in the moment. We’ll sort all that stuff out and whatever legacy, whatever that looks like, that is not really something for me to bother about, really.
“I’m not really fussed (about that). Other people can talk about that kind of thing. I just go about my business day by day and just enjoy it I like to go about my business and, particularly if there are any young players coming through, I want to try and help them where I can.”

Steve Smith further said that he’s always open to helping youngsters. He added that anyone can come to his room and he will share his experience. The batter also stated that he’s also keen to help skipper Pat Cummins. He added:
“My door is always open if any of the young betters want to talk about anything and have a conversation. I’m there to help them learn from, I guess, my experiences as well.
“And then supporting the captain as well. That’s my job as vice captain, to help him wherever I can. It’s been fun. I’m enjoying it.”
Steve Smith is currently preparing for the Test series against Pakistan, starting on 14th December. The batter has been putting hard yards and will be crucial for his team in the upcoming Test series. For the last one decade, he has been the backbone of the Test team.
If Australia have to fancy their chances of winning against Pakistan, Steve Smith has to play a massive role. He’s currently the No.3 ranked Test batter and would be hoping to set the stage on fire in the next series.
