The second Ashes 2025-26 Test ended with pure drama as Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith and England speedster Jofra Archer locked horns in a heated on-field clash on December 7. The explosive exchange happened in the ninth over of Australia’s second innings, right after Steve Smith whipped a stylish boundary through the leg side off Jofra Archer in Brisbane.

Archer, who was clearly fired up, unleashed a thunderous bouncer of 150 kmph at The Gabba in Brisbane. Smith hit hard but missed, and that was all the trigger the England fast bowler needed.

The fast bowler stormed forward to begin the drama as he asked, “Why play your shots when there's no rush on the scoreboard?” Well, the Australian captain refused to back down as he answered in the most brutal way possible, hitting Archer for 10 runs in the next two balls, including a towering six that came off a delivery of 155 kmph.

Not just that, the Australian batting mainstay walked past Archer with ice-cold confidence. Smith told Archer after that six: “You bowl fast when there's nothing going on, champ.”

Later, they exchanged some fiery words. Well, Australia sealed the game in the very next over when Smith launched Gus Atkinson over the leg side for another six.

The Kangaroos recorded a dominant eight-wicket victory over England in the Day-Night Test at The Gabba on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series. Following Australia’s stunning victory over England, Smith played down his fiery exchange with Archer.

The Australian skipper treated the incident as nothing more than friendly banter. Smith even brushed aside talk about their history, including the infamous clash from Lord’s, refusing to share what was said between them.

Steve Smith was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket, “What history do I have with him? He was just bowling at a good pace, and I'm [I'm] not really too sure what he said, and I'm not sure what I said either—and it's not really any of your business either, so we'll leave it out there. I heard there's a bit of a storm coming around. We obviously had a few behind us. It was a chance to just play a few shots.”

Furthermore, Smith explained that his attacking shots were a planned move. The short boundary behind him made the risk worth taking, and with rain expected, he felt it was the right time to speed up the scoring. Australia needed only a few runs, and Smith backed his instincts.

Smith signed off by saying, “The adrenaline was pumping at the end there. Obviously, we didn't need too many to win, and Jof was bowling pretty quickly. I had a short boundary behind me, and I thought, 'Why not just try to get up and under a few and put a few in the stands?'

Fortunately, it hit the middle of the bat on a couple of occasions. It was a huge win, obviously. It's great to go two-nil up. We've identified moments in the game and made the most of them. It's been good fun.”
