The middle-order batsman played close to 450 first-class matches across all formats. He represented Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Badrinath has been one of the stalwarts in the domestic circuit for India. He was very unlucky as his career coincided with a settled Indian batting line-up.

Hence he didn’t get enough opportunities in the national team. However, he did make a Test fifty on his debut against South Africa.

Badrinath has now been roped in coaching and commentary roles.

During an exclusive interview with the Hindustan Times, he spoke on his several achievements and the few disappointments which he incurred during his stellar career in the domestic fold.

When asked what prompted him to decide on his retirement, Badrinath said it was nothing which prompted him to walk off. He believed that he still could play at the highest level.

However, he said he cherished most of his dreams. Hence he decided to walk away from the game with his head high.

Subramaniam Badrinath said nothing prompted his retirement decision

“ Well, honestly nothing prompted me. I definitely believed I can still play, but the question was always about motivation. I have always been driven by motivation, by the passion to play cricket. When I started playing, I was driven to play for Tamil Nadu, wanted to win Ranji Trophy with them, then wanted to play for the country, then of course for Chennai Super Kings,” Badrinath told HT.

“But for the last one year, I did not feel the drive; I am a firm believer that if I do not commit myself 100 per cent to the game, then I should not play. It is my decision, I want to be present at 100%, but personally, the motivation level was falling. I was not playing for Tamil Nadu; I did not have any chance of playing for India, I had no IPL contract. When these things are not there, the motivation levels drop, and it is the right time to take a call,” he added.

Badrinath was satisfied with the sort of the first-class career. He further revealed he came from a humble background and hence valued everything which he got in his life.

There were struggles all along the way, I was struggling to get into the Tamil Nadu team, but then it is all part of the journey. Now when I look back it has been a great journey, I have played close to 150 first-class games, something which I could have only dreamt about, but God has been kind,” Badrinath concluded.
