Legendary India National Cricket Team batsman Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at a Punjab Kings (PBKS) star player for his suicidal move in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Gavaskar has also backed the Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to lift the IPL 2025 trophy after their victory over the Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh.
This is unbelievable - Sunil Gavaskar
Punjab Kings were terrible with the bat in the high-profile IPL clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the only batter who looked settled in the middle for a while was Marcus Stoinis.
The Aussie powerhouse, also known as the Hulk, was unfazed by the wickets falling around him, and he played an attacking brand of cricket. However, he fell for 26 runs off 17 balls with two fours and two sixes in the 11th over.
On the third ball of the 11th over, leg-spinner Suyash Sharma bowled a wrong 'un to Marcus Stoinis, who went for a horrible swipe and got castled. This made the batting great Sunil Gavaskar furious, and he blasted Marcus Stoinis on air, saying, "This is unbelievable. This is committing suicide, isn't it?".
Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar also slammed Shreyas Iyer for getting out to Josh Hazlewood while playing a wild shot. He said:
"This is not a good shot. This is a nothing shot. One can understand if you are trying to play it over long off, but this is just a wild swing. Two wickets down, just the fourth over going."
Possibly will be the champions on the 3rd of June - Sunil Gavaskar
RCB have sealed a place in the final of IPL 2025 after beating PBKS. They will face one among the Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Titans in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.
Speaking on India Today after Qualifier 1, Sunil Gavaskar hailed RCB, stating that different players have stepped up this season and backed them to lift the trophy. He said:
“Yes, I think that actually tells you the story of RCB this year is that they haven't been reliant on one or two players one player in batting or one player in bowling. Everywhere, somewhere or the other has put their hand up and taken the team home. And I think that is the key to what we have seen why RCB are in the final and possibly will be the champions on the 3rd of June."
They know that they have one big battle ahead - Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar further said that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru would not get carried away after Qualifier 1, as they are aware of the fact that they still need to cross the final hurdle. He said:
“Yes, they know that they still have one big game to play and so they're not getting carried away by this win. This is a massive win, as you said, the biggest win in terms of number of deliveries left.
"So any team could get carried away. But because this team has had the experience of being in the final and the disappointment of losing the final. They know that they have one big battle ahead, so they're not getting carried away, and that's the way to be."
