On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Suryakumar Yadav in the 19-man squad to take on England in the upcoming 5-match T20I series commencing from March 12th in Ahmedabad.

On Sunday, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the right-hander blasted a quickfire 33-ball half-century to put an icing on his maiden India call-up.

In a Group D game, playing for Mumbai against Delhi at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur, Suryakumar Yadav, with the help of 3 fours and 2 maximums raced to the score of 50 in 33 balls.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, Mumbai was chasing an ordinary total of 212 when Prithvi Shaw, who has lost his place in the national team, harrumphed a hundred to kickstart his journey to make a comeback in the Indian team. The diminutive opener smashed 15 fours and a couple of sixes in his 89-ball stay for 105 runs.

After electing to bowl first, Mumbai was on top of the Pradeep Sangwan-led Delhi outfit right from the onset as the openers – Anuj Rawat and Shikhar Dhawan – both were run out for a duck each.

Pacer, Dhawal Kulkarni, who has been retained by the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2021 dented them further with 3 wickets to his name. For Delhi, right-handed batsman, Himmat Singh notched up a valiant century and took his side to a total of 211, which was chased by Mumbai in 31.5 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

On Saturday, before the India squad announcement, Ishan Kishan played a stupendous hand of 173 runs off just 94 balls for his team, Jharkhand; while on Sunday, after getting his maiden call-up, Rahul Tewatia too, for Haryana blistered a knock of 73 runs from 39 deliveries.

The feeling is surreal: Suryakumar Yadav

On Sunday, after making it into the Indian squad for the first time, Suryakumar Yadav took to Twitter to express himself. The Mumbai Indians batsman posted an image of him sitting calmly in the middle of the pitch at the D Y Patil Stadium, where he has ground a lot in domestic cricket.

“The feeling is surreal,” captioned Yadav reflecting his happiness and relief to finally make the cut for the national team.

Both Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan were highly instrumental in the success of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 and in the season previous to that as well. Along with Yadav, Kishan, and Tewatia, Kolkata Knight Riders’ mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy is also included in the T20 squad, after missing the Australia tour owing to a shoulder injury.
