Amidst the reports of sacking as captain, Suryakumar Yadav got massive relief. There have been reports that Shreyas Iyer might take over as India’s new T20 captain after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026).

Some reports also suggested that Hardik Pandya is also in the race to replace Suryakumar Yadav, who has been going through a lean patch for a long time now with the bat. It is being said that the Indian selectors are not happy with Suryakumar’s batting performances.

Suryakumar Yadav set to continue as India’s T20 Captain

Amidst the swirling speculations, Suryakumar’s captaincy appears safe until the England tour at least. A Revsportz report suggested that the selectors are ready to wait till the end of the England tour to make the decisions over Suryakumar’s captaincy future.

The report hinted that Suryakumar will continue to lead the Men in Blue in the two-match T20I series in Ireland in June, followed by the five-match T20I series in England. After that, they will conduct the review before making any long-term decision on the T20 captaincy.

Suryakumar Yadav's form and fitness under scanner

It is being said that the selectors will keep a close eye on the current captain’s form and fitness during these two upcoming T20I series, and based on his performances, they will make the call as they will begin preparing a core group for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the LA28 Olympics.

India’s upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England are likely to play a major role in shaping their long-term plans for the new era after the end of IPL 2026, with the road now leading towards the 2028 T20 World Cup and the historic return of cricket to the Olympics in Los Angeles.

Last year, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had removed Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain and appointed Shubman Gill despite India winning the 2025 Champions Trophy under the Hitman. The selectors wanted to prepare early for the 2027 ODI World Cup because India will play very few ODI matches before the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav still has full backing despite IPL 2026 struggles

However, Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 captaincy situation is different. T20 cricket is played much more regularly than the ODIs, so the selectors will have enough time to make the decisions.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar may not be at his best in the ongoing IPL 2026, but the Indian team management still has strong faith in him. The explosive batter played an important role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year by scoring 242 runs in nine innings.

So, the selectors are not too worried despite his recent dip in form because they do not judge senior players only on IPL performances. The right-handed batter also shares a strong bond with head coach Gautam Gambhir and has full support inside the dressing room. However, he will need consistent runs soon to keep his long-term captaincy and Olympics dream alive.
