Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20I captain has come under the spotlight despite leading the Men in Blue to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph earlier this year.
As per a fresh report, the BCCI and selectors are already preparing Sanju Samson as India’s next long-term T20I captain heading into the next World Cup cycle and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Suryakumar Yadav guided India to T20 World Cup 2026 triumph
Suryakumar Yadav further strengthened his captaincy reputation by leading India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title earlier this year. India produced a dominant campaign and defeated England in a high-scoring semi-final before crushing New Zealand in the summit clash.
India defeated England by seven runs in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium after posting a gigantic 253/7. A few days later, Suryakumar’s men completely outplayed New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad, registering a massive 96-run victory after piling up 255/5.
Suryakumar’s overall captaincy numbers in T20Is are equally extraordinary. Since taking over leadership duties regularly, he has captained India in 52 T20Is and won 40 of them while losing just eight matches. Two games ended in ties and two finished without results, giving him an incredible win percentage of 76.92.
His T20 World Cup captaincy record is even more remarkable. Under his leadership, India won eight out of nine matches.
Suryakumar Yadav to be replaced by Sanju Samson as T20I captain
According to senior journalist G.S. Vivek, Sanju Samson is being viewed as the preferred leadership option for India’s next T20I phase, even though Suryakumar Yadav is likely to continue leading the side during the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
Sanju Samson is being looked at as India’s captain for the next T20 World Cup as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to return after more than a century.
“Sanju Samson looked up to take over the next T20 cycle as skipper. World Cup 28 and LA 28,” Vivek posted on X.
The BCCI also seems keen to build a fresh leadership core specifically for the next Olympic and T20 World Cup cycle, especially with several senior players entering the final stages of their careers.

Suryakumar Yadav's record in T20I cricket as a batter and as a captain
Since making his international debut in 2021, Surya has played 113 T20Is and scored 3272 runs at an average of 36.35 and a strike rate of 162.94. He has smashed four centuries and 25 half-centuries in T20I cricket, alongside 297 fours and 179 sixes.
His numbers as a batter with captaincy, however, show a slight dip compared to when he played without leadership responsibilities. As India captain between 2023 and 2026, Surya scored 1232 runs in 52 matches at an average of 28.65 and a strike rate of 154.96.
