Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket after a fresh report claimed that the veteran opener is unlikely to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While Rohit, remains one of the greatest white-ball batters of his generation, concerns around fitness, workload, and long-term planning have reportedly forced the BCCI and selectors to begin identifying future opening combinations.
Rohit Sharma doubtful for 2027 World Cup
Senior journalist G.S. Vivek reported on X that Rohit is “not likely” to play the next ODI World Cup and that the upcoming England tour could prove decisive regarding his international future.
The report further added that the selectors are already preparing backup opening options alongside Shubman Gill for the next generation of Indian ODI cricket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is the immediate replacement for Rohit Sharma, but BCCI is also looking at Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan as backups for the next ODI cycle.
“Rohit Sharma not likely to play next World Cup. England tour may be crucial,” Vivek posted.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than a year away, the selectors appear keen to slowly prepare a younger batting core for the future. Rohit will be 40 by the time the tournament begins, and the BCCI reportedly wants to avoid another last-minute transition phase.
The report also mentioned that Suryakumar Yadav is likely to continue leading India in T20Is during the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, while Sanju Samson is being looked at as a future T20I captain for the next ICC cycle, leading into the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma is battling hamstring issues
Fitness concerns have played a major role in the growing uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future. The Mumbai Indians opener suffered a hamstring injury during IPL 2026 in a match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
While scans reportedly did not reveal a major tear, the injury forced Rohit to miss several matches during the tournament. Even after returning to the Mumbai Indians lineup, he was mostly used as an Impact Player instead of fielding for the full duration of games.
The cautious handling of his workload has now reportedly become a concern for the Indian selectors as well. Although Rohit has been named in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, his participation remains subject to fitness clearance. Reports suggest that he is still undergoing strict fitness assessments and has not yet received complete medical clearance.
Rohit Sharma ODI stats and World Cup stats
Despite the growing uncertainty over his future, Sharma’s ODI numbers continue to place him among the greatest batters in the history of the format.
Since making his ODI debut in 2007, Rohit has played 282 matches and scored 11,577 runs at an outstanding average of 48.84 and a strike rate of 92.74. He has smashed 33 centuries and 61 half-centuries in ODI cricket, alongside 1090 fours and 357 sixes. His highest ODI score of 264 against Sri Lanka still remains the highest individual score ever recorded in ODI history.
Rohit’s numbers in ICC World Cups are equally extraordinary. Across the 2015, 2019, and 2023 editions, he has scored 1575 runs in just 28 matches at a staggering average of 60.57 and a strike rate of 105.49.
