Renowned fielding coach Biju George has revealed that Sanju Samson is more worried about winning a trophy with Kerala than playing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

This revelation comes weeks after Sanju Samson was nodded with a spot in the 15-man squad for the T20 WC by the Indian selection committee. On the back of his excellent performances in IPL 2024, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee included him as the second wicket-keeper batsman choice along with Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant.

What did Biju George say about Sanju Samson?

While speaking to PTI recently, Biju George made quite a few revelations about Sanju Samson's mindset and the struggles he went through to become a Cricketer. George, who has served as fielding coach of the Indian Women's team in the past, was the first cricketing mentor of Samson when the Kerala-based batter began his journey.

As we all know, opportunities for Sanju Samson in the Indian national team have not come so generously. In the shortest format, Samson had to wait for exactly 5 years to play his second game after making his debut against Zimbabwe in 2015. But he is still not an automatic choice and he only can blame his inconsistency for that.

In One-day cricket as well, Sanju Samson had to wait for a whole year to play his second game for India after making his debut against Sri Lanka in July 2021. In July 2022, Samson played his second ODI match against the West Indies but in this format, he was able to make the most out of it.

But the biggest news for Sanju Samson came when he was picked in the main squad for the T20 World Cup. There are solid chances that Samson can make his World Cup debut for the Men in Blue in the USA and West Indies. While another player will be excited and eager for the opportunity, Biju George has revealed that Samson is more keen on winning a trophy with his state team Kerala.

"We spoke a few minutes after his selection to the T20 World Cup. But he was more interested in talking about the need for Kerala to win at least one trophy in the upcoming domestic season. He was saying that more children will take up cricket in the state if the team gets some success at the national level." - Biju George told PTI.

George says Samson has always been strong mentally

Biju George then shed light on the mental resolve that Sanju Samson had since his early days in cricket. George narrated how Samson and his brother Saly used to be at the nets all the time regardless of the weather and the time.

Despite the nets in Thiruvananthapuram being 25 kilometres away from his home in Vizhinjam, Samson used to travel despite heavy rainfall. Biju George also disclosed that Samson used to pack his school clothes in his kit bag to attend school after training.

"Rain or sunshine Sanju and his brother Saly will be at nets at the Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram. It was raining heavily one day here, and I thought Sanju would not come for nets from his home at Vizhinjam, nearly 25 kilometres from the centre. Even at that age, he had next-level resolve." - George concluded.
