South Africa have suffered a huge injury blow ahead of the first Test of the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The upcoming series is a special one for both teams as it marks the return of South Africa in Bangladesh after a gap of almost a decade.

The Proteas have not visited Bangladesh for a Test series since the two-match series in 2015. And while South Africa would have liked to play the Test with a full-strength side, they will be missing a number of big names. The African outfit will be without their captain Temba Bavuma for the first Test.

Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the series opener owing to a left tricep muscle strain. While he will be traveling with the South Africa squad to Dhaka on Tuesday (October 15), he won't be playing the first Test. Temba Bavuma will continue his recovery under the supervision of the Proteas medical team and will prepare for the second Test.

Temba Bavuma's replacement:

In Temba Bavuma's absence, South Africa's limited-overs skipper Aiden Markram will be leading the team in the first Bangladesh vs South Africa Test.

The Proteas have also announced the replacement for their captain. Uncapped batsman Dewald Brevis has earned his maiden Test call-up. The right-handed batsman played in a first-class game last month when he plied his trade for South Africa A against Sri Lanka. Brevis had a decent outing in the game as he scored 49 and 74 in the four-day match.

South Africa have made another change to their squad ahead of the series. Fast-bowler Nandre Burger has been ruled out of the series due to a lumbar stress fracture. He has been replaced in the squad by Lungi Ngidi.

The South Africa squad will be attending a camp at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria from 12-14 October before leaving for Bangladesh. The first Test of the series is scheduled to be played from October 21.

While South Africa have never lost a Test against Bangladesh, they are yet to win one in Bangladesh. In 2015 when they played two Tests in Bangladesh, both the games had ended in draws. Overall, South Africa and Bangladesh have played 14 Tests so far and the former have won 12 of them.

South Africa squad:

Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Kyle Verreynne
