The Australia National Cricket Team has been under pressure over its recent performance against Bangladesh. They failed to win the two-match Test series as it ended 1-1. Australia will travel to South Africa later this year. Cricket Australia (CA) is already planning to protect its Test players for the summer season, and the traditional format will remain its top priority.
Pat Cummins’ side has struggled for form as players age, and their consistency has been called into question, especially in the batting department. The Aussies won the second game on the back of Mitchell Starc’s amazing bowling display at Mackay. Batting remains a concern given the form of some players, as former players have also questioned their place in the side.
CA will decide the schedule despite BBL privatization
CA will not allow private owners to lure Test players with higher salaries from the Big Bash League (BBL). There have been talks about the partial privatization of the top league in Australia. They are only planning to privatize the clubs of the BBL for the league and nothing else; the domestic format will remain the same.
CA chairman Mike Baird stated the board will have control of international schedules, player availability, the BBL salary cap, and branding proposals. Despite the partial privatization, they will control everything.
"It's pretty easy – if you want to be a partner, here's the schedule, and we decide what the schedule is," Baird said at the SCG on Tuesday. "It's a very basic protection that'll be there every step of the way.
"We've got a really unique position here, where actually the Big Bash games that follow the Tests are some of the highest rated. The schedule of Tests, the availability of players, that remains in CA's hands."
"The opportunity is to compete with the other leagues that their salary levels, in some cases, are higher or significantly higher."
CA prioritizes Test Cricket over anything
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg added that "centrally contracted Australian players' primacy is Test cricket, and that is written in the rules and regulations that any buyer will uphold". He also mentioned that there will be no big changes in the same for the summer season.
"We've anchored the Boxing Day Test, the Sydney Test into this schedule right through to the end of our (broadcast) contractual obligations in 2032," Greenberg said.
"Every time we play a Big Bash game straight after a Test match, they're our highest rating games so there's some significant commercial value to consider how we keep our summer."
"We want Test cricket to thrive, but it won't thrive because we want it to. It'll only thrive because we're making strong, strategic, long-term decisions."
Pat Cummins supports Cricket Australia's decision
Australia men’s and women’s team captains, Pat Cummins and Sophie Molineux, were present at the press conference with Baird and Greenberg. The two supported the decision from the board and also backed the partial privatization idea of the league, as Cummins believes it is a great sign for the game.
"Privatisation, if done well, can be a great thing for the sport," Cummins said. "So many benefits for obviously the Big Bash league, but as an Aussie captain as well, Test cricket's so important for me, and this sets us up really well for the future.
"The conversation's been very consistent from the men's international players in that we all want to be part of the Big Bash, but some things probably need to change with how the schedule and everything works at the moment."
Pat Cummins announces BBL return
Cummins, while speaking on the schedule, revealed that it has been his biggest barrier in some years, as he last played in the BBL back in 2018-19, and after the new announcement he feels that he might be able to play in the tournament after nearly 7 years.
"I'm a little bit different in that I think probably the schedule has been my biggest barrier over the years," Cummins admitted. "So I'm excited if it does open up that January window. "But there's only so many games we can play a year. I'd love it more of them were in Australia."
