Former England captain Alastair Cook has opined that the removal of an established captain like Tim Paine is a distraction that can unsettle the dynamic of a team.

Tim Paine stepped down from Australia’s Test captaincy after his involvement in a sexting scandal became public. Notably, back in 2017, he sent messages of a sexual nature to a female co-worker and was investigated by Cricket Australia.

Also, speedster Pat Cummins has been appointed as the new captain of the Australia Test team, and he is the 47th Australian to lead the team in Test cricket. Former captain Steve Smith has also made a comeback in the leadership role, and he has been appointed as deputy of Pat Cummins.

Cook feels that external noises are something that no teams want heading into the marquee series like The Ashes. He also added that it has been speculated that Paine’s absence will make Australia stronger but opined Paine stepping down from captaincy will unsettle the team.

“It is the kind of external noise that a team does not need going into such an important series. There has been speculation that Paine’s absence will make Australia stronger. It’s possible that his replacement.

“Maybe a better wicketkeeper-batsman but the removal of an established captain, in such circumstances, is a distraction that can only unsettle the team dynamic,” Cook said as quoted by cricket.com.

Meanwhile, Shane Warne talked about Steve Smith, who was banned from cricket following the ball-tampering scandal in 2018 and said that he shouldn’t have been made vice-captain. He said:

“His second chance is getting to play for Australia again and in my opinion announcing him as vice-captain opens up CA for ridicule and criticism.”
