Former India opener, Sunil Gavaskar pays a heartfelt tribute to the Indian team who have endured physical and mental challenges on their ongoing tour to Australia. Despite losing several players to injuries, without their regular captain, Virat Kohli, getting bowled out for their lowest Test total, and to make matters worse, being subjected to racial abuses, Team India has managed to keep their noses with Australia till the last couple of days of the Brisbane Test.

Sunil Gavaskar, in a video uploaded by broadcaster, 7Cricket, says that irrespective of the result in Brisbane, the Indians are proud of their cricketers for their ‘extraordinary’ display of ‘resolve, fortitude, and spirit’. He points out that most of the players have been away from home for more than 5 months since the IPL in the UAE.

“It doesn’t matter what happens here at the Gabba over these final two days. We Indians can and will be truly proud of our cricketers. I have led Indian teams on tours of Australia and know first hand, just how challenging it can be. But what we have witnessed in this series is something extraordinary,” Sunil Gavaskar told 7Cricket.

“The resolve, fortitude, and spirit displayed by these players has been inspiring. Most have been away from home and in quarantine for over five months. They have been routed in the most crushing way and with the world watching,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Australians will always remember what the Indians achieved this summer: Sunil Gavaskar

The former India captain, who has toured the Australian shores on multiple occasions, saluted the fighting gut of the Indian team throughout the tour. The 71-year-old reckons the Australians will respect and remember the resilience of Team India, just like their legendary captain, Allan Border.

Sunil Gavaskar opines that with two days left in the fourth match, and with rain around, Ajinkya Rahane’s men may even take the Border-Gavaskar back to India if they draw the game.

“They have seen friends battered and broken. They have been tested to their mental and cricketing limits at every turn, every minute. And even under that most intense train, they have never stopped fighting. And they may still somehow manage to take the trophy home,” Sunil Gavaskar further added.

“A trophy that was named to honor me and the great Allan Border. A captain who embodied everything we have seen in this series- mental toughness and skill. I know you Australians respect that most of all in yourself and your opponents. And I know you will always remember what these Indians have achieved this summer,” Sunil Gavaskar felt.
