James Erskine, manager of Australian opener David Warner, has made the shocking allegation that more than three players were engaged in the ball-tampering controversy in March 2018. The left-handed batter abandoned his request to have his lifetime leadership ban overturned, prompting Erskine’s remarks.

The ball-tampering controversy was allegedly orchestrated by the southpaw, prompting Cameron Bancroft to sand the ball.

Bancroft was suspended for nine months, whereas Warner and the previous skipper Steve Smith received yearlong suspensions.

Erskine brought up the fact that there were more than three parties involved during his appearance on SEN 1170 Afternoons, but Warner protected everyone and carried on with the game. In his words:

“You’d have to be a blind black Labrador, there were far more than three people involved in this thing, they all got canned, and David Warner was completely villainized. He’s shut up, he’s protected Cricket Australia, he’s protected his teammates on my advice, because at the end of the day, no one wants to hear any more of it, and he’s still playing cricket.”

Erskine went on to say that following a heartbreaking loss to South Africa in Hobart in 2016, the executives told the Australian players to use unfair measures to win.

“Let me tell you, the truth will come out. Two top executives were in the team’s locker room in Hobart, basically berating them for losing against South Africa, and Warner stated, “We’ve got to reverse-swing the ball.” We can only reverse-swing the ball by interfering with it, and they were instructed to do so” Erskine said.

Australia lost their third consecutive series to South Africa at home in 2016, after collapsing to 85 in the first innings. The game was eventually won by the Proteas by an innings and 80 runs.
