Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was brutally trolled on social media after the Mitchell Marsh-led team suffered a loss against the Afghanistan cricket team during the Super 8 match. Several fans criticized Ricky Ponting's remarks about Australia winning the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 undefeated.

The Australian cricket team suffered their first loss in the ongoing ICC tournament against Afghanistan during the Super Eight stage. The Men in Yellow registered four consecutive victories in the group stage. They continued their winning streak and defeated Bangladesh in their first Super Eight stage match.

The 2021 T20 World Cup champions suffered a shocking 21-run loss in their recent game at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent on Saturday, June 22 (local time). The Australia team failed to chase down a moderate 149-run target against the Afghanistan team as they managed to score just 127 runs in 19.2 overs.

Earlier, in an Instagram video, Ricky Ponting confidently predicted that the Australia cricket team would remain undefeated throughout the World Cup. However, Ponting also acknowledged that Afghanistan could pose a challenge to the Australian team, especially in spin-friendly conditions.

"I'm going to say Australia will go through this World Cup undefeated," Ricky Ponting said.

However, Ricky Ponting received backlash from fans after Afghanistan defeated Australia in the recent Super 8 match in the tournament. Several users mocked Ponting's earlier prediction with their comments under the video on Instagram.

The Afghanistan team managed to score 148/6 in their allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 60 runs off 49 balls, including four boundaries and an equal number of sixes. Gurbaz's opening partner, Ibrahim Zadran, added 51 runs from 48 deliveries, with the help of six boundaries.

Karim Janat (13) and Mohammad Nabi (10) were the only two players to reach double figures in the innings. Star Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins took his second hat-trick in the T20 World Cup 2024. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa picked two crucial wickets to limit the opposition team to a moderate total in the match.

In response, Glenn Maxwell scored 59 runs off 41 balls, which included three sixes and six boundaries. However, other batters failed to deliver during the run chase. Gulbadin Naib was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, taking four wickets. Naveen-ul-Haq secured three wickets to bowl out the Australian team.
